Discovering London's lively Latin music scene

Take a peek at the spaces in London that feature the spicy sounds of salsa all around the city, including Ronnie's Bar and numerous Latin restaurants.

    By Baruch Ben-Chorin, NBC News

Right on top of Ronnie Scott's, London's legendary jazz club, is Ronnie's Bar. You climb a dark set of stairs, and then the door opens to a well-kept secret: London's live Latin music scene.  Here, every Friday night, "Viva La Revolucion" celebrates  the Latin spirit.

Latin fever hasn't passed London by: Salsa classes have been popping up all over town in recent years, and throughout the city, Latin-American restaurants offer atmosphere as well as unique cuisine.

The Latin American expat community in London may not be as large as the ones in the U.S. or Spain, but it as vibrant. Touring Latin music bands often jam with the resident musicians at Ronnie's.  And since the United-States embargo on Cuba does not apply here,  Cuban musicians visit London frequently.

Yet it isn't only traditional Latin music: Just around the corner, at Floridita and Bar Salsa, Latin bands mix traditional music with contemporary reggaeton. For the London Latin community, these venues are a home away from home, but the sounds are there for us all to enjoy.

Revealed: London's hidden haven for foodies

For die-hard foodies looking for great products at reasonable prices, London's Maltby Street Market has emerged as an alternative to Borough Market. Food blogger Sally Hurst takes viewers on a tour of this food lover's paradise.

    By Sally Hurst

Borough Market is probably London's most famous food market, but I recently discovered Maltby Street Market just down the road. As an American chef and food writer who has lived in London for the past three years, I'm always on the hunt for the best places to buy ingredients for my clients. Often I'll drag my husband, NBC News producer Ghazi Balkiz, away from his busy schedule to accompany my on my latest culinary excursions. Whether you're a chef or just appreciate fine food, Maltby Street Market, with its fresh produce, unusual culinary products, and fabulous restaurants makes for a terrific day out!

I love London because there is always a surprise right around the next corner, and Maltby was one of those fantastic discoveries for me.  Not happy to continue paying a premium for space at Borough Market, several vendors decided to open their own little bazaar and keep prices reasonable for their regular customers. Now it's coming into its own, and on Saturday mornings Londoners flock to this little-known haven tucked between public housing high rises and car repair shops.

You can learn more about Maltby Street Market and the other culinary joys I encounter on a daily basis here on my blog, An American Chef in London.

London's Portobello Market: A trove for treasure hunters

    By Sigi DeVos, NBC News

If vintage of any kind is your thing, London's Portobello market is your hunting ground. There's anything from antique sporting goods to porcelain and silver, from painting to exquisite vintage clothes.

I am a producer for the TODAY show in London and I've always loved the abundance of vintage clothes that London has to offer, but going to Portobello can be bewildering unless you know where to start looking. In this video I'll take you to a magic little corner of the market where you can find some real treasures -- without getting crushed in the process!

London's Marylebone district: A mecca for music and art

    By Karl Bostic, NBC News

Imagine being invited to a stately home in the heart of London, filled with hundreds of art treasures, with music often on the side. Welcome to the Wallace Collection, which houses outstanding examples of French 18th century painting, furniture, porcelain and more.

And that's just one of the musical treasures of this colorful district of London. Around the corner you might hear Iestyn Evans practicing the organ at St. James Church at Spanish Place, one of the neighborhood's hidden gems.

Or imagine tracing the steps of rock music legends, to the very doorsteps of where they lived. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix and Madonna are just a few of the superstars who have resided in Marylebone.

And if you think you'll never find that lost vinyl record that's become a collector's item, think again. Try Oxfam Books and Records, and tell Tom Sindall what you're looking for.

And don't forget to take a trip down memory lane by going to an old fashioned pub with live music. The Golden Eagle on Marylebone Lane is truly a blast. Tony Pearson at the keyboards is an encyclopedia of standards old and new (and if you mention my name, he'll probably ask you to sing).

That's only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Marylebone. If you want to know more, Gaby Higgs at the St. Marylebone Society is the one to call.

London's colorful Wapping: Lift a pint where pirates roamed

    By Jack Rees, NBC News

Where else but London can you enjoy a refreshing pint of beer overlooking a hangman's noose? I'm Jack Rees, a producer for the London bureau of NBC News, and I live in Wapping, a riverside area that once was awash with skullduggery, teeming with cutthroat sailors, rakes and swashbucklers.

Because I love Britain's naval past, I'm eager to share my neighborhood with you; even to many citizens of this great city, it remains a hidden treasure. So in this video, I head to London's river Thames with maritime history expert Peter van der Merwe to track down where Captain Kidd was hung, tarred, and left to rot. Arrr!

NBC London Bureau producer Jack Rees grabs a pint at London's 'execution dock' with maritime history expert Peter Van Der Merwe to learn a bit of London's gruesome pirate history.

Tales from the crypt (beneath London, that is)

    By Rupert Barker, NBC News

My name is Rupert Barker and I am a London-based producer for the TODAY show. As such, I often have the chance to explore parts of the city most people don't get a chance to see.

There is a huge amount of history on the surface here, but there are also amazing stories to be found below ground too. In fact, there is a whole subterranean world right beneath our feet: the London under London.

In this video, I explore one such place: a vast honeycomb of tunnels under the busy streets of central London - the Crypt of St. Pancras Church, near Euston Station. It's a hidden corner that's well worth finding!

Claire Pinney, curator of St. Pancras Crypt Gallery in London, England, takes us on a tour of this extensive, elaborate underground crypt and explains its history.

    Discovering London's quaint Marylebone district

Karl Bostic, a producer in the London bureau for NBC News who has lived in the Marylebone neighborhood of London for several years, introduces viewers to the unique stores and characters it offers.

    By Karl Bostic, NBC News

I promise you will be surprised and will love my neighborhood when you visit the Marylebone area of London. There are so many unique shops you’ll want to call your own.

If you take a stroll down Marylebone High Street and Marylebone Lane, you are sure to discover something you hadn’t expected to find. At Daunt Books, ask for Brett (the manager) or Diane (the assistant manager) and tell them Karl recommended you stop by.  They will steer you to whatever book you're looking for.

At the Cancer Research charity boutique, the range and quality of the donated clothing is astounding. Allison Brandt, an American volunteer at the shop, is a great help. Matt the manager and Alex are the ones in charge of vetting all that is accepted and priced.

At the Fromagerie, Patricia is a fount of knowledge of local history, and all things cheese and local produce.

Martyn will tell you how his mother got the idea for The Button Queen more than 50 years ago, because of demand from collectors in the U.S.!

And as for VV Rouleaux, a place for flowers, tassels and trimmings of all kinds, if you talk to Rachel or Faye, they will make you feel like you're in Aladdin’s cave!

I've had a passion for running in London for 20 years, as has my friend Sharif Nashishibi. Here we talk about why we love running in London: Our favorite places, some well-known, some not, all of them safe and easy to find.
And we are particularly inspired to run in this city today... the Olympics are underway!

Carol Marquis, a London-based producer for the TODAY show, takes a runner's tour around London with Sharif Nashishibi, taking in the local sights while exercising.
