Sneak a peek at Team USA's official Olympic outfits

Classic tailoring and traditional red, white and blue have come together in Ralph Lauren’s collection for Team USA, which was unveiled exclusively on TODAY Tuesday.

As the official outfitter of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams, Ralph Lauren designed both the opening and closing ceremony parade outfits as well as a collection of village wear apparel and accessories. This is the third consecutive time the company has designed the official outfits for Team USA.

Modeling the official gear — berets and all — on TODAY were Team USA soccer player Heather Mitts and fencer Tim Morehouse.

They were joined by David Lauren, Ralph Lauren's Executive Vice President. In designing the outfits, the company was "very inspired by the 1948 Games, which is the last time that American competed in England," he said of the "updated take on old-world elegance."

Olympians Ryan Lochte, Bryan Clay, Giuseppe Lanzone and Heather Mitts model the official Olympic gear.

Mitts, the first to model the look, is a two-time gold medalist, winning both in Beijing in 2008 and Athens in 2004. She wore a white blouse and navy blazer, pairing the ensemble with a knee-length cream skirt and a scarf with red, white and navy stripes.

The athletes gave the gear a thumbs-up.

"It's really exciting to be in this outfit right now and know we'll be wearing it in the opening ceremonies," said Morehouse, who won silver in Beijing. "It's really cool." He wore a white cotton sport shirt with a red and navy necktie under a tailored double-breasted blazer with peak lapels. The men's blazers are paired with simple cream-colored flat-front trousers.

Didn't make the cut to compete at the Games? Men, women and children can buy the Team USA Olympic Collection to celebrate the Games in style. Other options and accessories include hoodies and tank tops as well as beach towels, duffel bags and sunglasses.

Why the huge Polo logo? The athletes are to represent the USA, not Ralph Lauren.

I have been looking forward to the Olympic games with anticipation, but I'm not sure if I'm all that excited anymore. They need to lose the berets, they don't look American, just something that the "Laurens" thought up! And speaking of the Laurens-why does the insignia have to be so large, smaller would have been more tasteful.(Speaking of the Polo logo). I will still watch and cheer on Team USA, but I don't want to look at the berets nor the Polo logo.

Sorry - but complete fail <barf>. Did Mitt Romney and his buddies design this? And the beret? Absolute disaster.

Soon as I saw the uniforms... I immediately flashed back to the movie European Vacation.

Where was everything made in China??? Now who is giving the class in how to wear a BERET? The US Army had to give classes and they can really look stupid if not worn correctly and who wants a stupid looking Olympic Team.

There is plenty of time before the Olympics. Why not take the blue, white and red strip and turn them all around so they are red, white and blue. If they must wear those ridiculous berets, fix them so they're the correct colors of the USA rather than a french flag.

Expected something better from Ralph Lauren - not these slightly embarrassing
costumes.

Not attractive - too stiff, military-like as well as looking very hot for summer. The flared skirt does not flatter the model and probably won't look good on all body type - short, tall, etc. The short white socks and shoes is especially ugly. Not every athlete looks like a model - the beret is just over the top. Was the idea to look stiff and over dressed like the royal family? Over all looks more like something from a yacht club - think of Ted Knight in Caddyshack.

As if the sense of impending dread about the London Games wasn't strong enough.

Also, reminding citizens of the world that you are completely unrepentant over the recent disastrous and meaningless wars is a great way to make friends!
